Checking Criminal History in Allegan County
Start with the question, not a person’s name. A current jail search belongs with the Allegan County inmate service. A filed misdemeanor or the first phase of a felony belongs in 57th District Court. A felony that was bound over belongs in 48th Circuit Court as well. The Internet Criminal History Access Tool, or ICHAT, covers public Michigan repository data. It does not replace those local sources. Police reports remain with the Sheriff, a city public-safety department, or the Michigan State Police office that created them.
Gather the legal name, alternate spellings, approximate event date, and any known case, booking, or complaint number. Date of birth can help distinguish common names where a public system permits it. Search results are leads. Compare the charge, court, event date, and outcome before treating two entries as the same Allegan County record.
- Identify whether the goal is a court case, current custody entry, police report, or statewide history.
- Search the matching official source with the most exact name or number available.
- Check both District and Circuit Court when a felony may have moved after bindover.
- Read each count and its disposition rather than relying on the first charge shown.
- Ask the record-holding clerk or agency for a certified or fuller copy when proof is needed.
ICHAT Gaps in Allegan Records
ICHAT is useful, but its boundaries matter. The Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center reports public Michigan felony arrests and dispositions plus serious misdemeanors that were reported to the repository. The public product omits warrants, suppressed records, juvenile matters, federal and tribal cases, traffic cases, other states, and minor local matters. Missing fingerprints or an incomplete disposition can also make the state view differ from an Allegan County court file.
The Michigan criminal-history services page explains those limits and the routes for name and fingerprint checks. The captured MSP page below highlights the state-level channel, while the local court and agency records remain necessary for a complete Allegan County search.
A no-result response should therefore be read narrowly. It means the entered criteria did not return public data within that particular system.
Michigan Official Background Checks
The Michigan State Police, Criminal Justice Information Center is the central state repository. Public ICHAT searches are name based and normally cost $10. The required subject fields are first name, last name, sex, race, and date of birth. A middle name or a separate search for an alias may help. Because the result is not fingerprint confirmed, it can miss a record or associate a similar identity when source data or the entered details are incomplete.
A person reviewing their own Michigan record can use the fingerprint-based MSP process. Prints establish identity and are collected through a Michigan-authorized Live Scan vendor or law-enforcement agency. Sites and collection fees vary, so the current vendor list controls. The FBI Identity History Summary is a separate fingerprint product for the subject’s own federal identity history. It does not replace Allegan County court documents, which may show a more current docket and the actual filed papers.
| Official source | Scope | Published base fee |
|---|---|---|
| ICHAT | Public Michigan repository data by name | $10 ordinary search |
| MSP personal review | Subject’s Michigan record by fingerprints | State and vendor fees vary |
| FBI Identity History Summary | FBI-held identity history by fingerprints | $18 direct FBI fee |
| Allegan court search | Filed cases in the selected local court | Online search is free; copies may cost |
Allegan County Court Record Trail
A felony usually creates two court trails. The 57th District Court handles arraignment, the probable-cause conference, and the preliminary examination or waiver. If the case is bound over, the Allegan County Prosecuting Attorney files an information in the 48th Circuit Court. The Circuit record then carries the felony plea or trial, judgment, sentence, and later postjudgment events. A misdemeanor generally stays in District Court.
Use MiCOURT Case Search and the local court links. Search by party name or full case number, select the right court, and use date, middle name, case type, or judge where offered. Online images are not guaranteed. Once the court and number are known, request the register of actions, charging document, judgment, sentence, or a named filing from the clerk.
The Michigan trial-court directory provides the official court structure shown in the image below. It helps explain why one Allegan County felony can move from District to Circuit without becoming two unrelated incidents.
Follow the case number and disposition at each stage. A booking allegation may change before the prosecutor files a count.
Criminal Record Types
Each Allegan County criminal record reflects a different act by a different office. An incident report records what an officer observed or learned. A jail entry records intake and custody. A court file tracks a prosecution. ICHAT assembles reportable state repository history, while OTIS concerns qualifying Michigan Department of Corrections custody or supervision. The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry publishes only information authorized for public safety use.
- Police and arrest reports: held by the Sheriff, city department, or MSP unit that created them.
- Booking records: maintained by the Allegan County Corrections Center for people taken into county custody.
- Court case files: kept by 57th District Court and, after felony bindover, 48th Circuit Court.
- Repository history: public Michigan data released through MSP ICHAT within statutory limits.
- Supervision and registry entries: separate records maintained through MDOC OTIS and Michigan PSOR.
A warrant is different again. No reliable official countywide public warrant screen was confirmed. Check the issuing court, review the docket for a warrant event, and call Sheriff/Corrections for process direction. ICHAT expressly excludes warrants.
Allegan Sheriff and Jail Records
The Sheriff’s Office and Corrections Center share 640 River Street, yet the records are not interchangeable. The Undersheriff serves as the FOIA coordinator for Sheriff and Corrections material. Requests can identify police reports, photographs, video, crash material, or a historical booking packet. Current custody begins with the county’s Inmate Lookup service. If that service fails or the booking is recent, call Corrections at 269-673-0500.
Booking can include identity details, property inventory, a photograph, fingerprints for reportable arrests, charge or hold information, and bond and court routing. Medical and security classifications are not presumed public. The inmate service is not a full historical arrest archive, and a release does not show that the underlying case ended.

Inside a Allegan County Criminal Record
The fields depend on the source. A repository entry can show identifying descriptors, a fingerprint-supported arrest cycle, agency, reportable charge, and reported disposition. A court file adds the court, case number, judge, amended counts, hearings, plea or verdict, judgment, sentence, and financial orders. A booking record centers on intake, arresting agency, listed allegations, bond, holds, custody status, and release.
| Name and identifiers | Legal name, aliases, date of birth, or limited descriptors, depending on access rules. |
|---|---|
| Arrest or booking | Agency, date, intake identifier, custody status, listed allegations, bond, and holds where public. |
| Charges and statutes | Filed or amended count descriptions, statute citations, offense dates, and charge level. |
| Disposition | The result for each count, such as dismissal, acquittal, plea, or conviction. |
| Sentence | Custody, probation, fines, costs, restitution, and other orders shown in the court file. |
| Supervision | Qualifying MDOC prison, parole, or felony probation status shown through OTIS. |
Protected identifiers, victim information, juvenile material, sealed files, and nonpublic set-aside records do not belong in an ordinary public result. Always read a disposition count by count.
Allegan County Record Dispositions
Disposition means the outcome of a charge or case. That single word keeps an allegation separate from a judgment. “Dismissed” means there was no conviction on that count, though another count may have produced a different result. “Acquittal” means a not-guilty result after trial. “Bindover” is not a conviction. It means the felony moved from District Court to Circuit Court after a preliminary examination or waiver.
When an ICHAT result appears wrong or lacks an outcome, compare it with the Allegan County court disposition. Obtain a clerk-confirmed or certified record when needed. MSP’s fingerprint-based correction process can then be used, including the RI-027 Judicial Correction Worksheet when a court cannot update the disposition electronically.
- Probable-cause conference
- A Michigan District Court felony-stage meeting concerning discovery, possible resolution, and preliminary-examination issues.
- Register of actions
- The dated list of filings, hearings, orders, and other events in a court case.
- Set aside
- A Michigan order that makes a qualifying conviction nonpublic, subject to statutory exceptions.
- HYTA
- Holmes Youthful Trainee Act status that can avoid a public conviction after successful completion for an eligible young person.
Public Access Laws in Michigan
Michigan FOIA governs executive public bodies such as the Sheriff and city police departments, but court access runs through the clerk, Michigan Court Rule 8.119, and local inspection procedures. A requester should ask for an existing, identifiable record. Active investigations, privacy, juvenile law, protected victim data, and security concerns can support redaction or withholding. A FOIA response is generally due within five business days, with one written extension of up to ten business days, though production may take longer.
Key access rules: MCL 15.231 states Michigan’s policy of public access. MCL 15.234 governs permitted fees. MCL 15.235 sets response timing. MCR 8.119 governs court records. MCL 28.243 controls criminal-history dissemination. MCL 780.621 governs application-based conviction set-asides.
Public access does not turn an arrest into proof of guilt. Name-only matches need identifier and disposition checks.
Allegan County FOIA Record Routes
The county’s FOIA hub is a routing page, not one universal inbox. Sheriff reports, crash reports, photographs, video, and Corrections material go to the Sheriff FOIA coordinator. Central Dispatch audio has its own request route. Court inspection and copy forms are separate because judicial records are not handled as ordinary executive FOIA files. A transcript also follows a distinct court process.
Describe the record with a date and time range, location, incident or complaint number, agency, and desired format. Ask to inspect or receive copies. Requests may be delivered through the official online or written form, in person, by mail, or by fax. Process questions can go to 269-673-0402, but a phone call alone may not count as the required written request.
| Record sought | Starting channel | Useful locator |
|---|---|---|
| Sheriff report or media | Sheriff FOIA coordinator | Complaint number, date, location |
| Current county custody | Inmate Lookup or Corrections | Name or booking identifier |
| Filed court case | District or Circuit clerk | Case number and document title |
| 911 audio or CAD | Central Dispatch request route | Date, time range, location |
Sealed, Expunged, and Restricted Records
Michigan uses both “set aside” and “expungement” for conviction relief. Application-based relief falls under MCL 780.621 and related laws. Clean Slate includes automatic set-asides under MCL 780.621g. A successful set-aside removes a qualifying conviction from ordinary public view, but Michigan keeps a nonpublic record for limited purposes. It is not a promise that every copy in every system is physically destroyed at once.
Eligibility depends on the type and number of convictions, exclusions, waiting periods, sentence completion, and any later case. An Allegan County applicant starts with the final judgment and current State Court Administrative Office forms. District Court handles its own misdemeanor judgment, while Circuit Court handles its felony judgment. The process can require certified records, fingerprints, service on the Attorney General and Allegan County Prosecuting Attorney, and a hearing. If public data remains after an order, confirm that the clerk transmitted it and use the MSP correction path.
Allegan County Warrant Record Checks
No reliable official countywide warrant search was found in the Allegan County sources. ICHAT cannot fill that gap because MSP excludes warrant information. For a possible failure to appear in a misdemeanor or early felony matter, begin with 57th District Court. A Circuit felony or probation matter belongs with 48th Circuit Court. A public docket may show “bench warrant,” “warrant issued,” or a similar event, but a delayed docket is not real-time proof.
Someone resolving their own possible warrant should confirm the issuing court and case number, ask the clerk what appearance or motion is required, and follow official directions on appearance and bond. The Sheriff can provide process direction at 269-673-0500. Never send money based on an unsolicited warrant call. Independently call the official court number.
Allegan County Supervision Records
57th District Court operates local misdemeanor probation. MDOC Field Operations handles felony probation and parole supervision, while the Michigan Parole Board makes parole decisions. The court docket shows the sentence and later violation events. OTIS can show qualifying MDOC prisoners, parolees, and probationers, but it generally keeps discharged people in the public system for only three years after supervision ends.
The Michigan Department of Corrections page is the official statewide entry shown below. It leads to corrections and supervision resources relevant to Allegan County criminal records.
Use OTIS by name or MDOC number. It is not the Allegan County jail roster, and the absence of a result does not erase an older conviction.
The Criminal Justice Information Center page shown next identifies the state repository that receives reportable arrest and disposition data.
That reporting chain explains why a court correction may also need to reach CJIC before the public repository view changes.
Allegan County Criminal Records by City
City departments keep their own incident reports even when a person is booked at the county jail. Holland also crosses the Allegan and Ottawa county line, so the event location determines the correct court and county chain. Allegan is the county seat, while Wayland has its own police and municipal FOIA route. None of the three cities operates a freestanding Michigan municipal court. Allegan-side criminal and ordinance matters use the District Court system.
Holland Criminal Records
34,378 residents citywide in 2020. Confirm which county held the event before choosing a court.
Allegan Criminal Records
5,222 residents in 2020. City Public Safety and county agencies remain separate record custodians.
Wayland Criminal Records
About 4,435 residents in 2020. Police reports stay with Wayland even after county booking.
